SHERYL CROW
Presentation of the new album "100 Miles From Memphis"
“100 Miles From Memphis”, the name of the seventh album of the singer, means for Sheryl Crow so much more than just a geographical point, it is a state of mind. She was grown up in a small town situated right 100 miles from Memphis and, as Sheryl Crow herself says, this album speaks a lot not only about her tastes in music but also about her outlook on life in general. The singer recalls the scenery lying around the road leading to Memphis – with all those large farms and fields, where the course of life runs in a different tempo and is regulated by its own separate rules. The three basements of the local life is God, prayers and land. Apparently, the music born on those grounds is very special too. And that music, by Sheryl Crow’s own confession, is a part of herself. It is there that the singer seeks inspiration and searches for the answer on the eternal question about why is she doing all this at all.
In the context of Sheryl’s Crow music career the name of her new album is no less significant. It means that the singer, who has been awarded with “Grammy” nine times, is at last returning to the very sounding that has once inspired her to become a musician. Turning to Sheryl Crow own words again, she has been cultivating this sound inside herself for a very long time. She says that twenty years ago, when her manager Scuter Weintraub, has just started working with her, he saw the very strong southern influence in her work: influence of Delany and Bonny and everything that has been presented widely on the “Stax” label records. And he has been punching her for a long time to write down everything that lives inside her.
You can sometimes feel in compositions written by Crow musical allusions towards El Green, Sly or Femely Stone and Steve Wonder. But nonetheless all nine songs of the album are more about the traditions of the classical school of music than about imitating any of the particular modern musical styles.
Although the album is concentrated fully on Sheryl Crow’s voice, there have been several guest stars who participated in the recording of the album. Keith Richards, an old friend of the singer, has added to the “Eye to eye” composition his trademark hashed style of playing, giving the song the schlep spirit of reggae with a juicy pulsing rhythm. The presence of Keith Richards on this album is significant – Sheryl Crow admits that at the start of her career she saw him as a real star and it was for “Rolling Stones” many years ago to give her a strong stimuli to move forward in this field.
Justin Timberlake, born in Memphis, has become another guest star. He has recorded back-vocal part to the cover version of the Terence Trent D’Arbi song "Sign Your Name" (written in 1987). The song was rewritten in the El Green’s style with typical thumping sound, so favored by the “Hi” label. Sheryl said that Timberlake had absolutely conquered her – he was extremely clever, neurotic and unbelievably all-knowing in everything that concerns different music styles.
And finally there is a surprise both for the singer and her audience. The Marvin Guy’s song “It’s a desperate situation” is not that well-known, but the melody reminded Crow the hit of the 70-s performed by “Jackson 5” – “I want you back”. Sheryl Crow didn’t mean it to become an official tribute sign, but she admits that she has been really touched. Michael Jackson’s death made her reconsider a lot and she was glad that they have eventually included the song in her album.
"100 Miles From Memphis" for Sheryl Crow is a right album at the right time. Sheryl admitted that her last record ("Detours", 2008) has been rather politics oriented and extremely subjective. Lyrics there have been dominating the melody and now she thinks it is the right moment to make something more heartfelt, sexual, where the music will take the lead. It has taken her several years but in the end Sheryl Crow has returned to her roots.
